The excitement and crowds continue to grow as we get closer to tournament action.
54 groups consisting of one tour pro and four amateurs participated in Wednesday’s Insight Pro-Am. The final Pro-Am is on Thursday.
The 3M Championship is one of the most popular events among Champions Tour players as evidenced by the fact that 27 of the top 30 on this years’ money list are in the field. Also among the field are Champions Tour rookies Paul Goydos and Scott Verplank. Both stopped by the Media Tent to share their thoughts on joining this tour and playing at the 3M Championship.
Verplank notes that the Champions Tour is new territory for him. After making his Tour debut at last week’s Senior Open, Verplank is excited to be back in Minnesota to play (he has previously played at the PGA at Hazeltine) and to be playing at an event that is so popular among the other players.
Goydos is making his Tour debut at this event and is looking forward to the fun and welcoming environment of the 3M Championship. Regarding the Champions Tour, he says “I’m the young guy now. It is kind of like walking into Cheers. Everyone knows your name.”
Tournament play starts Friday at 10:20 a.m. The Greats of Golf Challenge, featuring Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Gary Player, Annika Sorenstam, Lee Trevino, Fuzzy Zoeller and more takes place on Saturday. Admission is FREE all week. Come on out for some great golf and lots of fun!
